Feeding Britain Podcast: The latest episode of the Feeding Britain Podcast includes highlights from a recent summit held to launch the report of a pioneering independent evaluation of the Nourishing Norfolk Network by the University of East Anglia. This was a first-of-its-kind academic evaluation of a food club programme and, in this episode, we hear from those involved, ranging from academics to frontline partners, on what the evaluation found as well as the lessons to be drawn. You can listen to the episode on all major platforms including Spotify and Apple.

Sharing Good Practice – Council Tax Debt Campaign: Chipping Barnet Foodbank have recently been instrumental, as part of the Barnet Food Partnership, in leading a Feeding Barnet movement, with early success, calling on Barnet Council to reduce the use of bailiffs for council tax debt collection and take a more supportive approach. As a result of their efforts with campaign partners Citizens Advice Barnet, Barnet Council have agreed to a number of actions including investigating any individual cases of poor enforcement practice referred by the local Citizens Advice, reviewing processes for cases involving residents with vulnerabilities to ensure they are supported earlier and aren’t falling further into debt, reviewing and considering adopting the CAB CTAX collection protocol, and establishing bi-monthly meetings with the campaign team and Barnet Council, and 6-monthly meetings with councillors, to resolve issues and discuss progress.

Council Tax debt has emerged as a pressing issue across the wider Feeding Britain network, and we wanted to share this approach from Barnet in case it is helpful to inform similar local efforts in your area. The campaign called upon Barnet Council to consider the merits of a more flexible approach to council tax debt collection involving payment plans and better/ early communication with financially vulnerable households rather than bailiff action. They referenced the risks of bailiff action worsening poverty once additional fees were added and the impact of this especially on financially vulnerable households, the negative impact on wellbeing and mental health, and the additional strain placed on other council services such as temporary housing and social services. For more information about this campaign or to share experiences from your area, please reach out on info@feedingbritain.org

Sharing Good Practice – Annual Report: You may be interested in the Brighton and Hove Emergency Food Network Report 2025 produced by Brighton & Hove Food Partnership as an example of an annual report into the experiences, impacts and needs of local emergency food services and community projects. A major theme that emerges from the report chimes with recent trends identified by a number of our partners; that of a reduction in the numbers of people seeking emergency support and a shift toward affordable food models. You can read the full report or the report summary. You can also sign up to the webinar, on Dec 3rd at 11am, on Unpacking the latest findings on food insecurity in Brighton & Hove.

Free School Meal Registration Report: The report, “Registration for Free School Meals (FSM): issues and implications for research, policymaking, practice and access”, is the final report from a Nuffield Foundation–funded project led by the Education Policy Institute (EPI). It examines how Free School Meal registration is used as a proxy for disadvantage, deprivation, and family circumstances in research, and assesses its effectiveness, limitations, and implications for policy and practice. The report makes a series of recommendations for government and policymakers, including introducing a national system of centralised auto-enrolment for Free School Meals to reduce the number of entitled children missing out on free meals and associated support. You can read a summary of the report findings here.
